Even boards that are very old can be in pretty good shape, have lots of integrity left, and can be reused for many creative projects. Whether kept partially recognizable in their original form or repurposed into something altogether new, old fence material can add a touch of interest when used in ways that are different then what you would expect.
On the other hand, if your fence has rot boards and they become damaged, you simply replace them to extend the life of the fence. To make this DIY project as easy as possible, install the rot board during the initial construction of your fence, prior to attaching the pickets to the rails.
To help minimize warping and curling pickets, use 6-d 2-inch ring shank nails made out of galvanized steel for one-by-four or one-by-six fence pickets. The galvanized steel is less expensive than aluminum, but it has the potential to eventually corrode and is not recommended for cedar fences.
