Since most decks are made of wood, we can of course expect them to rot eventually. The average deck, composed of treated lumber joists, beams and posts, will last somewhere between 15-25 years depending on the climate zone it is in and how much water it is tormented by, not to mention how it is built.
Affix the boards together and use a waterproofing membrane for wood along the top edge to keep water from between the boards. Lay the beams on top of the posts in the beam brackets. Attach these to the top of the posts. Attach Deck Joists. Use structural screws and fasteners to attach these to the rim joists perpendicular to the deck
Flashing the tops of joists with peel-and-stick membrane protects them from water and seals penetrations from decking screws. Another advantage of the peel-and-stick flashing is that it seals around the decking screws, keeping the screw holes from taking on water over time as the framing expands and contracts.
Joist rot is caused through trapped moisture which remains in contact with treated and untreated wood deck framework and the above decking material. Wood decay can easily also take place when deck anchoring screws penetrate the deck boards, piercing the joist sub-framing underneath.
After the deck framing was complete, Imus Seal was applied on top of the double 2" x 8" ledger and wrapped around the joist ends to prevent corrosion of the galvanized joist hangers by creating a barrier between them and the pressure-treated wood. Imus Cap was then installed on the joists.
Protect your deck framing or patio project with Deck Joist Barrier Tape. Use our self-adhesive waterproofing joist tape which Prevents Exotics and PT Wood Rot 1-866-427-2547. When applying to the top edges and board ends of deck joists, center over the joist.
